The Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools’ Science Department announces the winners of the Elementary School District Science Fair and the Middle School District Science Fair for 2009-2010.

Elementary students, grades 3-5 displayed their projects at the fair on January 27-29.   Students selected projects from the areas of Physical Science, Earth Science, and Life Science.

The event capped off with an awards ceremony on January 29.

Middle school students in grades 6-8 competed on January 13-15 at Woodville-Tompkins Career & Technical Institute. Middle grade students who placed in the district fair will advance to the Savannah Ogeechee Regional Science and Engineering Fair. The SORSEF will be held February 9-11 at the Coastal Georgia Center The competition will include Savannah-Chatham area students as well as students from the 12 surrounding counties.

 

2009-2010  Elementary District Science Fair Winners:

3rd Grade:

1st place-Sunburst....Which angle of solar panel (0, 15, and 30) degrees will make a solar car go faster? , Jonathan Bethel-West Chatham Elementary

2nd place-Which materials bake cookies faster? , John Waits-Southwest Elementary

3rd place-Are you a righty or lefty? , Grace Fulp-May Howard

 

4th Grade: 1st place- Which juice has more Vitamin C?, Fernando Marquez-Windsor Forest

2nd place-More than just Crumby Bread, Mackenzie Cunningham-Jacob G. Smith

3rd place-What is the best method of storage for fruits and vegetables?, Tiaras Polite-West Chatham

5th Grade: 1st Place- Do you know what is produced by friction?, Aureana Barnwell-Haven

2nd Place- Wicked Meltdown, Makenzy Newbill-Bartow

3rd place-Bottled Water vs. Tap Water: Which is safest to drink?, Bless Loadholt-Bartow. 

Overall Winners:

1st place, Study Sounds, Madeline Williams-Charles Ellis

2nd place, Which fruit produces the most electricity?, T’Andre Turner-West Chatham

3rd place, Disco Inferno, Boysie Gordon-Derenne Middle

 

8th Grade:

1st Place,  Door Handle Danger, Bryan Knauff – Oglethorpe

2nd Place, Sunlight…Can It Be Replaced (LED vs. Fluorescent), Paula Small/Dominique Kennerly-Oglethorpe

3rd place, How does temperature affect the Strength of an Electromagnet?,  Anthony Gilliard-Bartlett.
