Savannah's Place for Art, Culture and Education (S.P.A.C.E.) is now registering students for its spring visual arts classes and workshops.  Day and evening sessions are offered for children, teens and adults in all skill levels.  Sessions begin April 5 and are held at S.P.A.C.E. studios, located at 9 W. Henry St.

Six and eight week classes are available. Spring visual arts sessions include ceramics, stained glass, metals, and painting. New offerings include a “Tea Time” ceramics class, a “Folk & Traditional African American Quilt Making” class, and a “Mixing Metalsmithing with Glass” course.  Space is also still available in the “Seven” March night & weekend workshop series, that began on March 6.

Class fees include instruction, use of studio space, use of equipment and all materials and tools required. This hand-building class is open to all skill levels. Students will develop basic hand-building skills in clay construction, glazing, and decorative techniques. Learn techniques such as pinching, coiling, and using slabs to make basic forms such as bowls or vases on up to more complex forms. $135

This introductory class will teach you the basics of throwing clay on the potter’s wheel. Trimming and decorative techniques will be taught to give each vessel its own flair. Students work at their own pace and receive individual attention. $135

“Tea Time” is a class that will focus on forms surrounding tea service. Students will design and make a complete Tea Set including a teapot, cups with saucers, and a cream and sugar set. The class will focus on wheel-thrown forms with hand-built additions. Previous wheel experience is required. $135

Watercolor Painting and Techniques, Ages 17+

This class focuses on the various techniques used in watercolor painting such as wet, wet on dry, dry on dry, masking off white areas, as well as layering and mixing colors. Many non-traditional techniques will be taught such as using wax paper, coffee filters, plastic wrap, salts, and rubbing alcohol to create interesting textures. This class is for everyone, beginners to those who want to learn more. $135

 

Folk and Traditional African American Quilt Making, Ages 17+

8 Weeks

Participants will learn to construct an appliqué quilt representative of the African American art tradition. Through this process, they will become acquainted with the art aesthetics of the African Diaspora, negotiating material events into the symbolic through the making of a folk and traditional quilt. $135

 

 

 

Beautiful Stained Glass, Ages 17+

In this beginning class students will learn all the basics of glass cutting, foiling and soldering together pieces of stained glass to create a finished work of art ready to hang in any window. No experience required. $135

Beginning Metalsmithing, Ages 17+

This is an introductory course to metalsmithing. The focus of this course is to introduce basic tools and techniques used by jewelers. Students will use both sterling silver and copper to create several pieces of jewelry. Expect to get your hands dirty! $135

 

 

 

“Mixing Metalsmithing with Glass” Continued, Ages 17+

Be inspired to create jewelry with character while exploring many new and exciting techniques. This class will allow students to continue to expand their metalsmithing skills in addition to experimenting with the medium of enamel. Kid’s Hands on Clay, Ages 6-10

Experiment with adding color to metal with enamels. Techniques and design will be taught using opaque and transparent enamels onto beautiful cooper forms. All techniques learned can be used to create colorful and fun jewelry. $135

 

 

 

Wild Fiber’s for Kids, Ages 7-10

Kids will have fun playing with all kinds of fibers to create beautiful works of art. Students will explore different strings, yarns, and felts of every color under the rainbow. A variety of techniques will be taught using these simple materials to create unique works of art. $85

 

 

 

“Seven” March Weekend & Evening Visual Arts Workshops

 

Relief Printmaking - Workshop, Ages 17+

Instructor: Curtis Bartone

Wednesday and Thursday, March 10 and 11, 6 - 9pm

This course will give students a basic knowledge of relief printmaking supplemented with some basic mono-printing techniques. Students will learn how to develop a matrix, create a registration template, handle water-based inks and additives, and choose paper. Hand printing as well as press printing will be covered. Students will have the opportunity to create small editions or suites of prints. Bring reference materials, sketches and photos for inspiration to the first class. $50

 

 

 

Relief Printing with Linoleum for Adults - Workshop, Ages 17+

Instructor: Amanda Hanlon

Saturday, March 20, 9am - 2pm

Make an edition of prints in an afternoon! Students will learn the basics of relief printing with linoleum cut blocks. Using water based inks, students will learn to print by hand as well as with a printmaking press. Each student will leave taking home with them a new edition of five unique prints on paper. $50

 

 

 

Storytelling with Collage - Workshop, Ages 6-10

Instructor: Jelena Pavlovic

Saturday, March 20, 9am - 12pm

 

Use collage and layering to create personalized 2D stories. Objects brought from home will be used both for inspiration and in the finished work. In a few sentences, students will write stories and sketch out a composition in pencil. Additional supplies of paints, paper, pencil, crayons, fabric and glue will be available for the creation of the finished work. $10

 

 

 

Simple and Bold Painting for Teen - Workshop, Ages 11-16

Saturday, March 27, 9 - 11:30am

By creating a unique stencil and working on paper with acrylic paints students will create a lasting image that has color and space. A variety of techniques will be taught such as spraying, dripping and stamping to overlap and create spatial effects. Students at the end of the class not only take home a new fabulous work of art, but will also take away a new stencil tool to continue this create process in future works of art. $10
