MAY 14 - Noted Author Examines Preservation May 20
A new book, “Restoring a House in the City,” by author Ingrid Abramovitch of New York City, features several of Savannah’s historic homes and will be the subject of a lecture on Thursday, May 20 at 7:00 pm at the Kennedy Pharmacy, 323 E. Broughton Street. Sponsored by Historic Savannah Foundation as part of Preservation Month, Ms. Abramovitch will discuss the craftsmanship that goes into building and restoring old homes and the skills of the artisans who restore them.
She’ll show slides of Low Country renovations in Savannah and Charleston and give a glimpse into what people are doing in other parts of the country. As well, Ms. Abramovitch will give tips on when to buy, how to evaluate homes before you buy, how to work with contractors and when to hire architects. The lecture is free and open to the public; books will be on sale and Ms. Abramovitch will remain on hand to endorse them.
“Old is the New Green” is the theme for this year’s Preservation Month, as established by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Historic Savannah Foundation fully embraces this concept, and this lecture serves as an example of how historic preservation is the ultimate recycling. Abramovitch’s lecture was supported by a grant from the Charles Evans Hughes Memorial Foundation of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
