MAY 18 - Washington Ave. Goes Bicycle-Only for Kids’ Ciclovia May 22
The public is invited to celebrate all things cycling this Saturday at Savannah’s first ever Kids’ Ciclovia.
Several blocks in Ardsley Park will be designated bicycle-only during the event, which will also feature cycling games, competitions and instruction for youth, as well as a chance to win several prizes.
The Ciclovia is from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 22, and will be focused in Tiedeman Park just north of the Savannah Arts Academy at Washington and Atlantic avenues. Part of Washington will be closed to vehicular traffic during the event, as will Atlantic Avenue surrounding the park. The event will also include free bike and helmet giveaways from Perry Rubber Bike Shop, free healthy food provided by the City of Savannah, and tents and booths from local cycling non-profits. Parking is available in the Arts Academy parking lot.
Participants can also join City leaders in cutting the ribbon to officially open the new Washington Avenue bicycle lanes, which stretch 1.6 miles from Daffin Park to Bull Street and connecting with the north-south Habersham Street bicycle lanes. A bike parade down the new lanes will follow the ribbon cutting.
The term Ciclovia is Spanish for "bike path" and is used worldwide to describe a bike path or the temporary closing of a street to automobiles for use by bicycles. The Washington Avenue Kids’ Ciclovia is a deliverable of a grant awarded by Specialized Bicycle Components to a partnership involving the City of Savannah, Perry Rubber Bike Shop, and the Savannah Bicycle Campaign. The Specialized grant will also provide a utility trailer full of youth bicycles and youth bicycle safety equipment for an educational series to be coordinated by the City and the Savannah Bicycle Campaign.
Youth-related groups interested in receiving free bicycle safety training should contact City of Savannah Mobility & Parking Services Coordinator Garrison Marr at (912) 651-6470 Ext. 1513 or e-mail at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
