This Saturday, May 22, at The Sentient Bean, Savannah’s very own Youth Poetry Slam team will take on the team from Jacksonville beginning at 1:00 p.m.  These six high school students have worked tirelessly to prepare for the competition and both teams are sure to bring their A-game.

Savannah’s team is:

Amber Lee                             Jenkins High School

Cassidy Hatcher                        Johnson High School

Josh Davis                            Johnson High School

Kim McMillan                           Jenkins High School

Marquis Williams                        Windsor Forest High School

Sierra Eason             Jenkins High School

For those who never been to a poetry slam before, be ready to experience poetry like you have never seen.  A slam brings the art of poetry performance into a competitive setting, putting dual emphasis on writing and performance – not only what they’re saying, but how they’re saying it (thanks to Poetry Slam Incorporated for the definition.)

The event is free and open to the public but donations will be accepted for starting the fund to send Savannah Spoken Word Teams to the national competition, BRAVE NEW VOICES, in San Francisco next year.  Open Mic opportunities for the audience will be hosted in between competitions, so be sure to sign in when you arrive.

Congratulations to coaches for both teams: Matthew Cuban Hernandez (904-806-5199) from Jacksonville and Clinton D. Powell (co-founder Spitfire Poetry) and Rushelle Frazier (host of Tongue the Open Mic night at Sentient Bean) for Savannah.
