Health & Well-being

CHATHAM COUNTY, GA - The Coastal Health District has received an initial shipment of 3,200 doses of the 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine. The shipment was part of the initial batch of 54,800 doses of H1N1 vaccine received by the state of Georgia. The doses are being distributed throughout the district's eight counties which include Bryan, Camden, Chatham, Effingham, Glynn, McIntosh, Liberty and Long.

The first shipment is in the form of a nasal spray which contains live attenuated influenza vaccine (live virus). The spray cannot cause the H1N1 flu; however, as with seasonal flu vaccine, some minor side effects could occur including a low-grade fever, runny nose, nasal congestion or cough.

Because the first vaccine allocation is small and consists of the nasal spray only, the Coastal Health District is following recommendations by the state of Georgia to target young children (primarily ages 2 to 4) with the initial vaccine doses.

"More doses are expected to arrive in the district in coming weeks, including the injectable version of the vaccine," said Dr. Diane Weems, Coastal Health District Chief Medical Officer. "As we receive more shipments, we will continue to make the vaccine available to additional priority groups including, young children, pregnant women, healthcare workers, and other high-risk populations. We expect to receive ample supplies of the vaccine as we move further into flu season and ask that our citizens be patient. As soon as the H1N1 vaccine is readily available, it will be offered in multiple sites throughout the district."

Nasal spray vaccine doesn't take as long as vaccine in flu shot form to produce, which is why it is ready first. The H1N1 vaccine is made using the same procedures used to make regular seasonal flu and is safe and is expected to be quite effective.

Health departments will not charge for the vaccine; however Medicaid, Medicare and some private insurance can be billed for a nominal administration fee.

Womancare Obstetrics & Gynecology in Savannah recently welcomed Dr. Ericka Patrice Stone to the practice. Stone provides obstetrics and gynecology services and has a special interest in pediatric and adolescent gynecology.
Stone obtained her medical degree from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield in 2005. From there, she interned at the Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pa., and went on to complete her OB/GYN residency at Louisiana State University in New Orleans in 2009.
“I tailor my care of each patient to fit the person and deliver information to this in a way that they can understand,” Stone said. “I take the time necessary to make the patient feel cared for and never make them feel rushed.  I make them know that I care about them as a person.”
Stone has a great interest in improving healthcare for women worldwide.  In Zimbabwe, she studied and discovered cultural differences among the women there regarding their health care. In Guatemala, she studied ways to improve usage of available health care by women in the country.
Stone also worked with The Champaign Crisis Nursery in Champaign, Ill., and the Urban League of Springfield, Ill., where she spearheaded community healthcare forums and fairs to empower its members with healthcare knowledge and increase their access to healthcare screening opportunities.
“We are excited and very fortunate to welcome Dr. Stone to our practice,” said Dr. Kyrin Dunston. “Her education and background make her an exceptional physician and an asset to the community.”

As a parent, keeping your child out of harm's way is an utmost priority, as well as a full-time job. So, how can you trust that your child is safe from the hidden dangers – ranging from faulty cribs to recalled products – that lurk in and out of the home?
According to Julia Cartee, owner of Once Upon A Child® of Savannah, "Many parents in the Savannah area have expressed concern about the prevalence of recalled children's products. But, they should know that the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has all of the recalled products listed on their website, so any parent can find comfort in knowing that the products their children use can be confirmed as safe.
"It is unlawful to buy and sell recalled products," added Cartee.  "We regularly monitor CPSC recalls and advisories to ensure that no faulty products end up in our stores."
Cartee is bringing attention to this effort in honor of Baby Safety Month, which is taking place this September. In conjunction, Cartee notes that recent research from the Toy Industry Association indicates that the total number of toy recalls during the second quarter of 2009 decreased 75 percent versus the same time period last year.
According to Cartee, these positive developments are due, in part, to the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, which went into effect this past winter. The new law requires that domestic manufacturers and importers certify that children's products made after February 10th of this year meet all standards put in place to eliminate lead and certain toxic chemicals.
Sellers of used children's products, however, such as thrift stores and consignment stores, are not required to test children's products in inventory for compliance with the lead limit before they are sold. But, as Cartee notes, this has not stopped Once Upon A Child® of Savannah from making a commitment to residents in the local area that the products in the store pass a rigorous safety checklist.
"Baby Safety Month is an ideal time for parents to go through their children's inventory of toys and accessories and clear out any items that may be broken or over used," says Cartee.
Across the U.S., Once Upon A Child® leads the nation in the buying and selling of name brand, and “gently used” children’s apparel, baby equipment and furniture, books, toys, and more.
Her store is located on Hodgson Memorial Drive, at the Kroger’s shopping center.

In Savannah, “Dr. Laura Live!” will be presented at the Savannah Stadium 10, behind Savannah Mall.
Schlessinger invites moms and their families to celebrate Mother's Day and join her in a special tribute to the women who receive little recognition for their devotion to motherhood.  Known for her no-nonsense advice on the popular internationally syndicated radio program, Schlessinger will recount her own life as a career woman turned stay-at-home mom showing her journey from “mis”-conception to conception, and from birth to the joys and struggles of parenting during this live stage show.
“After my difficult delivery,” Schlessinger says, “ending up with an emergency C-section (and then there were all those teenage years!), I thought I'd never want to relive any of that!  However, in retrospect, it was all part of the most wondrous experience of my life: being a mommy.  I can't wait to relive it all with you as we celebrate being a mommy!”
“Dr. Laura Live! In Praise of Mom” is adapted from Schlessinger's newest book, In Praise of Stay-at-Home Moms, now available from HarperCollins.  The live show will feature audio and video vignettes about moms from sons, daughters, grandparents, dads and moms; and in addition, Schlessinger will answer questions from audience members live at the Irvine Barclay Theatre.
“Dr. Laura, America's top female radio talk show host, will be at her multimedia best during this timely and uplifting in-theater event celebrating moms across the country,” said Dan Diamond, vice president of Fathom. “This is a must-see for anyone who wants to honor their mother this Mother's Day.”
With a broadcast career spanning more than 30 years, Schlessinger continues to dispense her no-nonsense advice to millions of listeners each week on more than 250 radio stations nationwide. She is the author of 10 New York Times best-selling books and four children's books.
