The Beaufort Academy of Dance will take 25 of its top dancers to compete in a national dance competition to be held at the Tremaine Dance Convention Center (Tremaine) in Orlando Fla. July 7- 11. The academy, founded by Artistic Director Aleisia Ashlaw, is in its 10th year of competing nationally.
"I am so proud of the hard work and dedication of the dancers, teachers and staff," Ashlaw said, "Our dancers set high standards for themselves and tirelessly work to be the best they can be. I couldn't ask for more."
To be invited to Tremaine to compete nationally, dancers must place in the top three slots at regional competitions held in over 30 cities nationwide. Dancers from the Beaufort Academy of Dance chose to compete in Atlanta and Winston Salem, NC.  All competing dancers, some coming as far as Puerto Rico, will be given an opportunity to compete for a chance to perform for Mitzi Gaynor, a top singing and dancing motion picture star who won 17 Emmy Award nominations and who is currently touring the United States in her new one-woman song and dance extravaganza, "Razzle Dazzle: My Life Behind the Sequins."
During the 2008 Tremaine national competition, dancers also competed for a chance to perform for renowned pop singer, dancer, choreographer and record producer Paula Abdul. Out of the hundreds of dances in the competition, only nine were chosen for this opportunity - among them were several of Beaufort Academy of Dance's junior students, who received the Junior Best Showmanship Award.
In addition to the competition, dancers will take master classes by renowned dancers and teachers who work with numerous celebrities and performers. Teachers interested in learning new techniques and expanding their knowledge base will be given opportunities to take part in various training classes and seminars.
The Beaufort Academy of Dance is located in the Shell Point Plaza off of the Parris Island Gateway in Beaufort, at Kids College at 17 Goethe Rd. in Bluffton and next door to Bucks Pizza and across from the Piggly Wiggly in Ridgeland.
