APRIL 1 - DeRenne Middle School & West Chatham Middle School to Receive Donation
(SAVANNAH, GA) On Thursday, April 2, Wilderness Southeast and DeRenne Middle School Students will celebrate a donation from Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation of $10,000 to go toward the Fish Gotta Swim program.
"I think the field trips were good because it opened our eyes to new things in nature," explains Kaleeuh Steele, a 6th grade student after participating in the program. "It also gave us a new foundation for learning. I learned that animals and plants are just like humans; even if they cannot talk, their actions tell us what they need."
The Fish Gotta Swim program emphasizes water quality and life needs. Although sixth grade participants have a great time during the events, they gain much needed life experience in the process.
From touching a turtle to riding a boat for the very first time, students receive a hands-on introductory experience with ecology. Students learn how to perform and record scientific experiments, demonstrating basic concepts usually taught during physics and zoology courses.
Says Ms. Foshee, a DeRenne Middle School 6th grade Science teacher, "You would not believe how much Fish Gotta Swim is helping the students in their regular classroom. They are now connecting together the things we teach them, and they have these experiences to draw on when we study topics from their textbooks."
Wilderness Southeast is a non-profit organization striving for environmental education. Since 1973, WiSE has specialized in providing exciting opportunities to learn about nature and wildlife, while immersing yourself in beautiful, fascinating places. Explorations for individuals, families and groups of all integrate information from many fields; biology, ecology, geology, astronomy, natural and cultural history. Whether you choose a personal or scheduled program, WiSE will simply help you see, experience and learn.
