Congressman Jack Kingston (R-GA) met with Fleming’s Boy Scout Troop 461 in Hinesville on June 23 to assist the troop in earning their Citizenship in the Community merit badge. To earn the badge the troop had to interview a local elected official and discuss issues impacting their community.
“It is an honor to be able to spend time with such intelligent and promising young men,” said Kingston. “These are the future leaders of America and the skills they learn through scouting will better prepare them for a successful future. They are setting an example not only for their peers but for all of us to follow as well.”
The Citizenship in the Community merit badge requires a troop to meet with an elected official to discuss issues that impact them and their community. Members of the troop held nothing back when interviewing the congressman, raising questions ranging from the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico to military funding and even school lunch programs. Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Religion were also main concerns of the troop.
He explained his role in government, the three branches of government and the role each plays in our daily lives. “Our troop and the entire Boy Scouts truly appreciate Congressman Kingston taking the time out of his schedule,” said Don Sanker, the troop’s leader. “We know how busy he is and it means the world to the boys to have this special opportunity.”
