Command Chief master Sergeant Betty L. G. Morgan has retired this summer after 32 years of service in the Georgia Air National Guard.  Her career has included many historical firsts as she became the first African-American and woman to become the Command Chief (the top enlisted advisor to the commander) of the 165th Airlift Wing, Georgia Air National Guard, and of the entire Georgia Air National Guard.

Chief Morgan also is an honored teacher in the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System, teaching 8th Grade at Hubert Middle School.  She has been named Teacher of the Year in 1995, 2000 and 2002.  She also was selected by USA Today newspaper 2005 Teacher’s team.  She was presented in 2003 with the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum Achievement Award in 2003.

Chief Morgan is a resident of Savannah and a graduate of Savannah State University and Armstrong Atlantic State University.
